Gas Equipment Standards

Whether at home or at work, we tend to not even think about the safety or performance of gas equipment around us. Why is that? Because there are safety standards that are developed by companies such as CSA America, Inc. A standard is a document that specifies minimum requirements for design, construction, performance and quality control during production of the product. Products are then evaluated against these standards by certification agencies like CSA International.

The Standards Program

Standards provide written guidelines for designing manufactured products so the products will conform to widely recognized and reasonable concepts for safety, performance, durability, interchangeability and other criteria.

Developing Standards

CSA America, Inc. manages more than 40 committees, subcommittees and working groups that develop and maintain safety and design standards for gas appliances and related accessories marketed in the United States and Canada. These standards cover products such as central heating, water heating, space conditioning, cooking and fuel cells, which are fuelled by propane, natural or hydrogen gases. They also apply to equipment for regulating, igniting, controlling, measuring and distributing these gases at the point of use.

CSA America, Inc. maintains committee rosters, arranges meetings, takes and publishes meeting minutes, processes proposed standards changes, conducts ballots, prints and sells standards documents, and responds to inquiries from the public about gas related standards.
