Why Standards MatterStandards help to create products and services that live up to your expectations. They help lower production costs, promote interconnectivity, and facilitate trade. For consumers, this means a broader selection of goods and services, a more competitive marketplace, and greater consumer confidence. It also means safer, healthier, and more environmentally sound products and services. Through the work of our standards development program, CSA America's impact is felt in many important areas - for residential products such as central heating, household appliances, and water heaters; and for new energy sources such as fuel cells and hydrogen.

Did you know?

In the past 10 years, the number of household fires involving electrical or gas products in the U.S. have declined, resulting in significantly fewer injuries.

CSA America publishes an entire family of standards and certifies a wide range of products relating to electrical and gas products such as, household appliances, luminaries, gas water heaters and central furnaces.

Standards and certification are just two links in the safety chain. Ultimately, safety is also affected by regulations, education, new technology and better ways of doing things.

Why Consumers Matter to CSA America

Without the valuable contribution of people from all walks of life, CSA America's work would not be possible. That's because we don't write the standards ourselves; acting as a neutral third party, we provide a structure and a forum for developing the standard, while product users, consumers, manufacturers, government officials, academics and members of the public determine its content. Because so many of the products that meet our standards are used by consumers day in and day out, we encourage consumers and users to actively participate on standards development committees - from the earliest stage of development. We also welcome public input on standards under development. In this way, we can produce standards that more accurately reflect the needs and expectations of the marketplace.
