"I can influence the standards development process personally by taking part in it. This is an incredible opportunity that more people ought to discover."
- Sondra Bruni, Consumer Representative on the Board of Directors and Standards Policy Board

"I am happy to represent the consumer, especially when it comes to safety issues such as trying to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning."
- Celia Gibbs, Consumer Representative on Gas-Fired Refrigerators and Portable Camping Equipment

"Working on standards which are harmonized prepared me to be a consumer in two countries . . . It is broadening to be exposed to this phenomenon . . . for me it was a hint to "broaden my horizons" if I was going to be an effective consumer representative."
- Peggy Smyth, Consumer Representative on Outdoor Cooking & Illuminating Appliances

Consider a Standards Development Committee

You can work directly on standards development committees. If you share a commitment to the consumer, a desire to serve the public interest and have the ability to work constructively as part of a committee, you should consider this unique opportunity for consumer participation.

We also welcome members who may also bring specialized technical knowledge or experience to the committee table.

Consumer representatives attend committee meetings, review research reports, vote and comment on draft standards and revisions. They provide a unique and valued perspective to the standards development process and help to ensure that the needs and concerns of consumers and the public are taken into account in developing standards.

As a consumer representative on a standards development committee, you can…

  • Get to know and work with other committee members and experts from a wide variety of fields
  • Learn about new advances in technology and keep up to date with emerging marketplace issues
  • Contribute to the content of standards and make a difference!
